To earn a CD Title in the CKC Novice Class,

the dog must complete the following exercises:

1. Heel on Leash and Figure Eight

Without dog or handler tugging on the leash, the dog must heel while walking at a normal speed, walking slowly, running, halting, turning, and while weaving around human 'posts'. The only command the handler is allowed to give the dog during this exercise is the initial 'Forward' to tell the dog to move with the handler. No command of any kind can be given to halt, slow, speed up, or turn your dog.

2. Stand for Examination

The handler poses/stands their dog and then stands 6 feet in front of their dog. The dog should remain frozen in position while the judge touches the dog's head, body, and hindquarters. The dog is not allowed to move its feet, shy away from the judge, growl, sit, or lie down during this exercise.

3. Heel Free

This is includes the same exercises as Heel on Leash, except OFF LEASH.

4. Recall

The dog is required to stay in the sitting position until the handler calls it. Upon being called, the dog must come immediately in a brisk trot or gallop and sit centered directly in front of the handler, close enough for the handler to easily reach out and touch the dog's nose. The dog is not allowed to touch the handler. Upon the handler's command, the dog must move quickly to heel position and sit.

5. Long Sit

The handler tells the dog to sit and stay, then moves to the opposite side of the ring. The handler remains there for one minute, then returns to their dog. The dog is not allowed to sniff the dog next to it, or move out of the sit position until the handler gives the command.

6. Long Down

The dog is put in the down-stay position. The handler is not allowed to touch the dog while giving it in the down-stay command. The handler remains on the opposite side of the ring for three minutes, then returns to the dog. As in the Long Sit, the dog is not allowed to sniff the dog next to it, or move out of the down-stay position until the handler gives the command.

To earn a CDX Title in the CKC Novice Class,

the dog must complete the following exercises:

1. Heel Free and Figure Eight

Off leash and without forging, lagging, or swinging wide, the dog must heel while walking at a normal speed, walking slowly, running, halting, turning, and while weaving around human 'posts'. The only command the handler is allowed to give the dog during this exercise is the initial 'Forward' to tell the dog to move with the handler. No command of any kind can be given to halt, slow, speed up, or turn your dog.

2. Drop on Recall

The dog is required to stay in the sitting position until the handler calls it. Upon being called, the dog must come immediately in a brisk trot or gallop until the 'Drop' signal is given. The Drop command must cause the dog to promptly go Down and Stay in the Down position until the handler signals the dog to Come. In response to the Come command, the dog must and sit centered directly in front of the handler, close enough for the handler to easily reach out and touch the dog's nose. The dog is not allowed to touch the handler. Upon the handler's command, the dog must move quickly to heel position and sit.

3. Retrieve on Flat

The handler puts the dog in the Sit-Stay/Wait position and throws a dumbbell. The dog waits for the Fetch command, then promptly picks up the dumbbell and returns to sit directly in front of the handler with the dumbbell in its mouth. The dog holds the dumbbell until the handler gives the command or signal to take the dumbbell. The handler then tells the dog to Finish sitting neatly on the left side of the handler.

4. Retrieve over High Jump

Basically the same principal as Retrieve on Flat, except the dog is required to jump over a hurdle to get the dumbbell, and again to bring it back to the handler. The height of the hurdle is dependent upon upon breed and/or height of dog. As a rule of thumb, the dog is required to jump about 3/4 of it's height at the withers. (So a dog that is over 12" but under 15" would need to jump 10" high.)

5. Broad Jump

The handler leaves the dog in the Sit-Stay, goes to the right side of the Broad Jump. The handler then sends the dog over the jump. After completing the jump, the dog returns to sit directly in front of the handler until given the Finish command, causing it sit in the heel position. The Broad Jump consists of short 4 hurdles that can be placed in distances of 16" - 72".

6. Long Sit

The handler tells the dog to sit and stay, then moves to a place out of sight of the dog. The handler remains there for three minutes, then returns to their dog. The dog is not allowed to sniff the dog next to it, or move out of the sit position until the handler gives the command.

7. Long Down

The dog is put in the down-stay position. The handler is not allowed to touch the dog while giving it in the down-stay command. The handler remains out of sight of the dog for five minutes, then returns to the dog. As in the Long Sit, the dog is not allowed to sniff the dog next to it, or move out of the down-stay position until the handler gives the command.
